Life at Ahn's Tae Kwon Do

About Tae Kwon Do / Moo Duk Kwan
At Ahn's Tae Kwon Do you will eventually come across the term “Moo Duk Kwan” — on a black belt, flag, certificate or patch on an instructor's uniform. Moo Duk Kwan is the trademarked name of a martial art organization founded by Hwang Kee in Korea in 1945.
By the 1950s Moo Duk Kwan, teaching Tang Soo Do, had emerged as the largest and most influential of the five major kwans. A government-driven unification and standardization effort commenced which resulted in several mergers and name changes. In 1965 the Tae Soo Do Association changed its name to Tae Kwon Do.
Beyond a doubt, if you look toward the “heart and soul” of Tae Kwon Do you will find Tang Soo Do / Moo Duk Kwan. Today Tae Kwon Do is internationally controlled by Kukkiwon (aka World Tae Kwon Do Headquarters) located in Seoul, Korea.
About Kukkiwon
Kukkiwon (국기원), also known as “The World Taekwondo Headquarters,” is the official governing organization, sanctioned by the South Korean government, to oversee all things related to Tae Kwon Do. It establishes and maintains standards, grants and registers black belts, and defines the sport of Tae Kwon Do.
Kukkiwon defines the sport of Tae Kwon Do for the International Olympic Committee, so that fair, standardized competition can be a part of the Olympic Games.
Ahn's Tae Kwon Do students who achieve their Black Belt receive official Kukkiwon certification — a credential recognized by martial arts organizations worldwide.
The Educational Value of Tae Kwon Do
Tae Kwon Do training has great potential to change a person physically, psychologically and emotionally, in a very positive way. For children, it builds confidence, athletic ability, and discipline. For adults, it offers stress relief, improved fitness, and practical self-defense skills.
Increased strength, improved coordination, and mastery of a new skill all lead to an improved self-image. Every instructor has seen students improve their grades, find better habits, and dramatically change themselves because of Taekwondo.
The training develops not just physical skill, but character and confidence that lasts a lifetime. Students learn discipline, respect, perseverance, and self-control — qualities that serve them in every area of life.
